Overview

Wix Payments is the right default for a Wix store that also sells in person, and a mediocre reason to choose Wix. The pricing is transparent down to the chargeback fee, the 2.6% flat in-person rate on Wix POS is genuinely competitive, and the hardware range — from a $69 mobile reader to a $1,699 register — is broader than Squarespace's. But the online rate is Stripe's own 2.9% plus 30¢, so a merchant who switches from a connected Stripe account saves nothing on the web and gives up portability; American Express at 3.7% plus 30¢ is nearly a point above the base rate; and Wix's help centre documents rolling reserves, one-time reserves and payout holds in enough detail to make clear how much discretion the risk team has. That discretion, combined with support that starts with a chatbot and offers callbacks rather than a number to ring, is what fills the one-star reviews. B- reflects a competent, honestly priced product whose weakness is what happens when a payout is held and nobody picks up the phone.

Best for: Wix merchants who sell both online and face to face and want one dashboard for both — a boutique, a café with an online shop, a studio selling classes and memberships. The 2.6% POS rate is the best number in the schedule, the hardware is priced sensibly, and Wix Checking and Wix Capital give a US merchant a place to spend and borrow against the same balance. It also suits stores that want Affirm, Afterpay and Klarna switched on without separate contracts.

Strengths

  • + The whole fee schedule is published on one help page, by country and by payment method, down to the keyed rate, the Tap to Pay rate, the cross-border surcharge and the chargeback fee — rarer than it should be for a platform processor.
  • + A competitive in-person rate: 2.6% flat on Wix POS hardware in the US, 1.7% in the UK and 2.7% in Canada, with no per-transaction cents on terminal sales.
  • + A real hardware line, from a $69 mobile reader to a $1,699 register, plus Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android, so a Wix store can sell at a market, a counter or a pop-up without a second processor.
  • + PayPal, Venmo, Affirm, Afterpay, Klarna and Apple Pay are switched on from one settings page rather than through separate applications, and refunds carry no additional fee.
  • + No contract, no monthly fee beyond the site plan and nothing to cancel; the processing runs on Adyen and Stripe underneath, so the rails themselves are the ones most of the internet already runs on.
  • + Wix Checking and Wix Capital give US merchants an embedded checking account with instant payouts and a cash-advance option that settles from the same balance.

Trade-offs

  • – Online, it costs exactly what Stripe charges directly — 2.9% plus 30¢ — so a merchant who switches from a connected Stripe or PayPal account saves nothing and loses the ability to take the processing relationship elsewhere.
  • – American Express is 3.7% plus 30¢ online and 4.3% plus 30¢ keyed, close to a point above the base rate, and the instalment options from Affirm, Afterpay and Klarna cost 6% plus 30¢.
  • – Reserves and holds are documented policy: Wix's help centre describes rolling reserves that keep a percentage of every payout for a set number of days, one-time reserves held from the available balance, and payouts placed on hold until an issue is resolved, without saying how long any of it lasts. One-star reviews describe exactly that.
  • – Support starts with an AI chatbot, then live chat in weekday hours or a callback — available around the clock in English — but there is no inbound phone number and no published escalation route for a held payout, which is the wrong shape when the problem is money you cannot reach.
  • – The parent's independent record is heavy on complaints: 936 BBB complaints closed in three years — enough that BBB publishes only one in five — against an A+ rating, and a 3.5 Trustpilot score from 28,968 reviews with 22% one-star. Those cover all of Wix, not just payments, and should be read that way.
  • – Cross-border cards carry a 1.5% surcharge plus 1% currency conversion in the US, and a first payout waits roughly seven days while the account is verified and the pending period clears.
