Overview

Omise is a solid, regulated way for an online business in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia or Japan to accept local payment methods alongside cards, with prices published per country and no monthly fee or contract term. Its strength is local coverage: PromptPay and Thai mobile banking, PayNow, DuitNow and FPX, and Japanese konbini and Pay-easy, all on one API. We grade it B- because the headline card rates are not cheap (3.65% plus VAT in Thailand, 3.30% + SGD 0.30 in Singapore), money is held before you can withdraw it (a default 21 days in Japan), the terms let Omise keep a closed account's balance for up to 12 months, its own published documents disagree on notice periods and fees, and there is very little independent merchant feedback to judge its support by.

Best for: Online businesses registered in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia or Japan that sell mainly to local customers and want local QR, bank and wallet payments from one provider at a published price.

Strengths

  • + Published, itemised per-transaction prices for each of its four countries, with no setup fee, monthly fee or monthly minimum
  • + Strong local payment coverage: PromptPay and Thai bank apps, PayNow, DuitNow and FPX, and Japanese konbini, Pay-easy and PayPay
  • + Local methods are much cheaper than cards, for example PromptPay at 1.65% and Thai mobile banking at THB 10 a payment
  • + Regulated: licensed by the Bank of Thailand since 2018 and holds a Major Payment Institution licence from Singapore's central bank
  • + No minimum term or exit fee in the published Thai merchant agreement
  • + Japanese merchants can pay more to shorten the holding period from 21 days to as little as 1 day

Trade-offs

  • – Card rates are high for the region: 3.65% plus 7% VAT in Thailand (about 3.91% all in) and 3.30% + SGD 0.30 in Singapore
  • – Money is held before you can withdraw it: 7 days in Thailand and 21 days by default in Japan
  • – Each withdrawal costs THB 20 in Thailand on the price list (THB 30 in Omise's own Thai contract documents) and JPY 260 in Japan, and you must request it or schedule it
  • – Omise can keep a closed account's balance for up to 12 months and suspend an account without notice
  • – Its own published documents disagree on the Thai transfer fee, notice periods and refund fees, and the Thai terms say they override the merchant agreement
  • – Online only: we found no card terminal product, and very few independent merchant reviews

Fees in detail
