Overview

Unzer is a reasonable choice for a German or Austrian shop, café or salon that wants one company for the card terminal, the till, the webshop checkout and invoice or instalment payments, and is happy to negotiate a contract. The product range is broad, the POS Go all-in-one till is cheap to start with, and payouts can be daily. The grade stops at B- for three reasons. Pricing is mostly quoted: the published figures are 'from' rates and the vendor's own pages disagree with each other. The contract length, notice period and chargeback fee are set in the individual merchant contract, not in the published terms. And the company's recent history includes a BaFin onboarding ban and two anti-money-laundering fines, with the ban lifted only in October 2024, plus a reported change of control to its lenders after the company missed its loan covenants in 2023.

Best for: Small and mid-sized shops, restaurants and service businesses in Germany and Austria that sell both in store and online and want terminals, till software, a webshop plugin and white-label invoice or instalment payments from one provider.

Strengths

  • + One provider for card terminals, till software with German fiscal compliance built in, webshop checkout and white-label invoice and instalment payments, with local installation and a named contact.
  • + Low-cost entry for small shops: the POS Go till and PAX A920 terminal are listed at €0 a month on Unzer's German shop, with card fees from 1.29%.
  • + Daily payouts are available, including free daily payouts of credit-card revenue into a no-fee business account through Unzer Financial Services.
  • + Regulated as a payment institution in both Germany (BaFin) and Luxembourg (CSSF), and Unzer announced in October 2024 that BaFin had ended its monitorship and fully lifted the onboarding ban after Unzer says it spent more than €20 million on compliance.

Trade-offs

  • – Pricing is mostly quoted. The published figures are 'from' rates, and Unzer's own pages disagree: the English pricing page lists the POS Go at €29 a month including VAT, the German shop at €0, and the e-commerce box shows both a €149 setup fee and €0 setup.
  • – Minimum term, notice period and chargeback fee are not in the published terms; they sit in the individual contract, and an older Austrian AGB used a 24-month minimum with 12-month auto-renewal.
  • – A recent compliance record: BaFin banned new customers and fined Unzer E-Com €350,000 in 2022 over money-laundering controls, including a payment arrangement involving hundreds of mostly shell-company merchants, and the CSSF fined Unzer Luxembourg €145,000.
  • – Terms allow wide protective measures, including suspending payouts, switching off payment methods, demanding a holdback and treating payouts as provisional for up to 18 months, and some merchants report funds being held with slow support replies.
