Overview

For a farmers'-market stall, a dog walker, a tutor or a food truck whose customers already pay each other on Venmo, a business profile is close to the cheapest legal way to take that money: 1.9% + 10¢ is below Square, Stripe and PayPal's own retail rates, there is no monthly fee, no chargeback fee and no contract, and the customer sees a name they trust. Treat it as an extra tender type, not as your processor. Cards are only accepted through Tap to Pay in person, at 2.29% + 9¢; there is no online checkout, invoicing, recurring billing or accounting integration on the profile itself; the whole thing lives in one person's phone; and Venmo can and does restrict profiles, hold balances and demand beneficial-owner documents with support that reviewers describe as an automated loop. Keep the balance swept to the bank, keep records of what was sold, and route anything larger than a small-ticket consumer sale through a real merchant account.

Best for: US sole proprietors and very small consumer-facing businesses — market vendors, personal services, clubs, side businesses — that already get asked 'do you take Venmo?' and want to say yes at a published, low, fee with no monthly cost.

Strengths

  • + Cheap and published: 1.9% + 10¢ on payments from other Venmo users is below the 2.6–2.9% plus cents that Square, Stripe, PayPal and most app-based processors charge, with no monthly, setup, PCI or chargeback fee and no contract.
  • + Your customers are already there — 67 million monthly active accounts and more than 100 million in total as of PayPal's fourth-quarter 2025 results — and they pay nothing extra, even from a credit card, which removes the friction of asking them to enter card details.
  • + Tap to Pay on a phone at 2.29% + 9¢ turns the same profile into a contactless card terminal with no hardware, cheaper than most tap-on-phone products.
  • + Payments to a business profile carry Purchase Protection for the buyer, are tagged as goods and services for tax reporting, and leave the seller's personal Venmo activity separate.
  • + Standard bank transfers are free and receiving is unlimited; a verified profile can move up to $49,999.99 a week to a bank.

Trade-offs

  • – It is a wallet, not a merchant account: no online checkout, invoicing, payment links, card-on-file, recurring billing, virtual terminal, hardware or accounting integrations — anything beyond a customer paying from their app or tapping a card in person needs a different product.
  • – Frozen accounts and held balances are the defining complaint: a 1.1 TrustScore from 1,268 Trustpilot reviews (93% one-star, unclaimed profile), 4,581 BBB complaints in three years, and current reports of business profiles restricted pending beneficial-owner documents with no payments allowed until a review completes.
  • – Support is the other: reviewers describe automated email replies, a help loop inside the app, and no path to a person, which for a business with a held balance is the difference between a nuisance and a cash-flow crisis.
  • – One person only: the individual who created the profile is the only one who can log in, there is no co-owner or employee access, and the profile can be managed only in the app.
  • – Seller protection is narrow — documented shipped goods only — and under the User Agreement the seller carries the full amount of any reversal or chargeback plus fees, with no coverage for services, digital goods or most of what a small service business actually sells.
  • – Venmo's own pages disagree on the Tap to Pay fee: the fees page and the Android FAQ say 2.29% + $0.09, the transaction-fees help article says 2.29% + $0.10, and the business-profiles marketing page says 2.9% + 9¢.

Fees in detail

  • Online rate: A business profile has no online checkout, invoice or payment link of its own; a customer can pay the profile from anywhere in the Venmo app
  • International: US only. Business profiles, Tap to Pay and Venmo itself are available to people physically located in the United States; there is no cross-b
  • Disputes: No dispute fee is charged; the seller is responsible for the full amount of any reversed or charged-back payment plus any fees
