Overview

SumUp is one of the few processors that publishes its whole rate card and asks you to sign nothing. In-person is 2.6% + 10 cents, online and keyed is 3.5% + 15 cents, there is no monthly fee on the pay-as-you-go plan and no early termination fee because there is no term. That combination is genuinely hard to find. The weakness is what happens when something goes wrong: SumUp underwrites merchants instantly and reviews them afterwards, so freezes, verification holds and delayed payouts are a recurring theme in its public reviews, and support is app-based rather than a named account manager.

Best for: Sole traders, market and mobile sellers, cafes, salons, tradespeople and anyone processing modest volume who wants to take a card today without an application, a contract or a monthly bill.

Strengths

  • + The entire rate card is published — 2.6% + 10 cents in person, 3.5% + 15 cents online or keyed, 2.9% + 15 cents on paid invoices
  • + No contract, no term, no early termination fee and no monthly minimum on the pay-as-you-go plan
  • + SumUp's US pricing page states there is no additional fee for a dispute, which is unusual — most processors charge $15 to $25 per chargeback
  • + Sign-up is effectively immediate; you can be taking cards the day the reader arrives, with no underwriting interview
  • + Over 4 million businesses use SumUp by the company's own count, so the hardware and app are well-worn rather than a first-generation product
  • + Optional POS and marketing tiers let a growing shop add software without changing processor or renegotiating the rate

Trade-offs

  • – Account freezes, verification holds and withheld payouts are the dominant theme in negative public reviews, and resolution is reported as slow
  • – Flat-rate pricing gets expensive with scale — by mid five figures a month, interchange-plus from a conventional processor will normally beat 2.6%
  • – Support is app and email-first with no named account manager; reviewers repeatedly describe it as hard to reach when something is genuinely wrong
  • – Instant onboarding means underwriting happens after you have money in flight, so a rejected category is discovered as a closure rather than a decline
  • – Card-not-present at 3.5% + 15 cents is poor value if a meaningful share of your sales are online or keyed
  • – Hardware and subscription prices differ between SumUp's own pages and third-party listings, so confirm the current figure at checkout rather than from a review

Fees in detail

  • Online rate: 3.5% + 15 cents per transaction (also applies to manually keyed entry)
  • International: Invoices paid through a SumUp payment link are 2.9% + 15 cents
  • Disputes: SumUp's US pricing page states it does not charge an additional fee for a dispute. Some third-party directories list a $10 chargeback fee —

Standard published rate for a domestic online card payment. Confirm current pricing on SumUp's pricing page.
