Overview

For a South African online business, Peach Payments is a straightforward choice. It publishes per-method pricing, accepts sole proprietors, settles daily in rands at no charge and has no minimum term, and its checkout supports most of the payment methods South African shoppers use: local and international cards, pay by bank, Capitec Pay, wallets, several buy-now-pay-later providers and crypto. The grade stops at B for four reasons. The R1.50 processing fee is charged on every attempted transaction, including declines, refunds and reversals, and a disputed transaction carries a R350 admin fee. One published rate disagrees between its fees page and its merchant agreement. Kenyan, Mauritian and in-store pricing is not published at all. And the agreement makes your balance an unsecured debt owed to you, with any interest on it kept by Peach.

Best for: Small and mid-sized South African online stores on WooCommerce, Shopify, Wix, Magento and similar platforms that want card, pay-by-bank and buy-now-pay-later options in one checkout, free next-day settlement and a contract they can leave without a fee. Also businesses that sell in South Africa, Kenya and Mauritius and want one provider in all three.

Strengths

  • + South African pricing is published per payment method, and the full merchant agreement, with its fee schedule, is downloadable before you sign up.
  • + No setup fee, no monthly fee and no minimum term on the South African Growth plan. You can cancel on written notice without an early-termination fee.
  • + Free settlement on the next business day in South Africa. Peach's agreement says merchant funds are kept in a separate bank account.
  • + A wide set of local payment methods in one checkout: pay by bank, Capitec Pay, wallets, five buy-now-pay-later providers, store cards and crypto in South Africa; M-Pesa in Kenya; MCB Juice and Blink in Mauritius.
  • + Accepts sole proprietors and businesses without a website (through payment links), and has plugins for the main South African e-commerce platforms.

Trade-offs

  • – The R1.50 per-transaction fee applies to every attempt, including declines, and refunds, reversals and chargebacks cost R3.00 each. A disputed transaction also carries a R350 admin fee.
  • – Kenyan, Mauritian, in-store and PayPal pricing is quote-only, and one published rate (Float) disagrees between the fees page and the merchant agreement.
  • – Daily settlement on the Growth plan starts only after two weeks of trading, and your balance is an unsecured debt owed to you by Peach, with any interest on it accruing to Peach.
  • – Shopify and Wix stores pay an extra 0.2% platform fee under the merchant agreement, and tokenisation costs R200 a month.
