Overview

Payplug is a credible choice for a French small or mid-size business that wants one bank-backed provider for its website and its shop at a published price. The plans are clear, the euro-zone card rates are competitive for a flat-rate provider, and the online contract can be ended on 30 days' notice. We hold the grade at B for four reasons. Payouts are on request by default and can take about a week to land, and longer for a new account or while compliance checks run. The terms give Payplug broad rights to hold funds and set up reserves. Terminal rentals carry a 24-month term with early-exit fees. And there is little recent independent customer feedback to judge support by.

Best for: French SMEs, retailers and e-merchants that sell mainly to euro-zone consumers, want online and in-store payments in one portal, and value a provider backed by a large French banking group.

  • + Owned by the BPCE banking group; the contracting company is a payment institution authorised by the French regulator (licence dated 2011)
