Overview

PaySimple does the thing most payment platforms are bad at — it publishes the whole price, on one page, with no contract behind it. For a service business that bills recurring customers and wants card and bank payments in the same place as its invoicing and customer records, that is worth real money. What holds the grade down is the shape of the price and the shape of the company. $79.95 a month before a single transaction is a heavy fixed cost for a small operator, the card rate of 2.9% plus 30 cents is standard rather than good, and money from card sales lands on the third business day rather than the next one. Behind that, PaySimple is a mature brand inside a much larger public company that has bought more than fifty others, and the complaint record — held funds, abrupt account closures, slow support — reads like a platform being run for margin rather than growth. B- is a competent, transparent product you should price against its monthly fee, not its rate.

Best for: Service businesses that bill the same customers repeatedly and want billing and payments in one system: clinics and therapy practices, tutoring and lessons, cleaning and pest control, personal training, professional services on retainer, membership and dues-based organisations. It pays for itself fastest where ACH does the heavy lifting — 1% plus 30 cents on a $500 bank payment is $5.30 against roughly $14.80 on a card — so anyone who can move recurring customers onto bank debit gets the most out of the monthly fee.

Strengths

  • + The entire price is published on one public page: $79.95 a month, 2.9% plus 30 cents on cards, 1% plus 30 cents on ACH. Almost nothing else in merchant services is this legible before you talk to a salesperson.
  • + No contract and no cancellation fee, stated outright by PaySimple rather than negotiated — which removes the three-year auto-renewing term and the early-termination fee that dominate complaints about this industry.
  • + ACH at 1% plus 30 cents is genuinely cheap for recurring billing, and it is the same platform, not a bolt-on: a $500 recurring bill costs about $5.30 by bank debit against roughly $14.80 by card.
  • + Billing, payments and customer records live in one system, so a failed recurring payment, a stored card on file and the customer's history are the same record rather than three integrations.
  • + The customer portal lets customers update an expired card themselves, which is the single most effective way to stop recurring revenue leaking.
  • + A+ from the Better Business Bureau, accredited since February 2015 — meaning the company answers complaints rather than ignoring them.

Trade-offs

  • – $$79.95 a month before a single transaction is a large fixed cost for a small business, and it is the number that decides whether PaySimple is cheap or expensive for you — at $5,000 a month of volume it adds roughly 1.6 percentage points to your effective rate.
  • – Card money arrives on the third business day, and American Express one business day later still. Next-business-day funding is common elsewhere in 2026, and PaySimple offers no paid way to go faster.
  • – There is no discount for card-present volume: tapping a card and keying one over the phone both cost 2.9% plus 30 cents, which is poor value for anyone taking payment face to face.
  • – Held funds and abrupt account closures are the recurring theme of the public complaint record, including a merchant describing more than $25,000 held. A month-to-month agreement gives you no protection against a risk decision.
  • – Support quality is the most consistent criticism across BBB complaints and independent review sites, with slow responses and unresolved refunds.
  • – The public pricing page does not address PCI compliance fees, chargeback fees or monthly minimums. Silence is not the same as zero — get them in writing.
