Overview

BitPay is the credible incumbent in a category most merchants do not need. If you have genuine demand to accept crypto or stablecoins, this is the fifteen-year-old company with published rates, daily fiat settlement and a real compliance programme, and it removes the two things that scare merchants about crypto — price volatility and holding the asset. What keeps it out of the B+ range is a consumer-facing support reputation that is genuinely bad, a sanctions enforcement history, and the plain fact that for most businesses the crypto acceptance rate is a rounding error that does not justify a second payment integration.

Best for: Merchants with observable crypto-paying demand — luxury goods, precious metals, electronics, hosting and VPN, gaming, some international B2B, and increasingly stablecoin-settled cross-border invoicing. Also a reasonable fit for businesses that want a no-chargeback channel for high-ticket items, and for merchants who would otherwise have to take crypto by hand and manage the tax and price exposure themselves.

Strengths

  • + Fifteen years old and still operating — BitPay was founded in May 2011 and is the longest-running company in crypto payments, a category that has buried most of its entrants.
  • + The complete rate card is published: 2% + 25 cents, falling to 1.5% and then 1% at $500,000 and $1 million of monthly volume. Almost nothing else in payments publishes tiers like this without a sales call.
  • + No chargebacks. A blockchain payment is a push transaction and cannot be reversed by the payer's bank, which removes friendly-fraud exposure entirely on this channel.
  • + The merchant is not exposed to crypto price movement. Invoices are priced in fiat and BitPay settles the quoted amount, so accepting bitcoin does not mean holding bitcoin unless you choose to.
  • + Settlement is daily on business days, with a documented $20 minimum for USD, which is fast and clearly stated by the standards of this industry.
  • + A BBB A rating with fifteen years in business and a single unresolved complaint on file.

Trade-offs

  • – A 1.2-star Trustpilot score across 296 reviews, with about 89% of the last year's reviews at one star. Even discounting that these are mostly wallet users rather than merchants, it is a serious signal about the support organisation.
  • – BitPay settled with the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control in February 2021 over 2,102 apparent sanctions violations between 2013 and 2018, paying $507,375. The failure was that it screened its merchants but not its merchants' customers, despite holding the IP address data that would have revealed them.
  • – The 2% base rate is meaningfully above a normal card-present or card-not-present rate for a healthy business, and the 25-cent fixed component makes small tickets expensive.
  • – The volume tiers only help at real scale — the discount does not begin until $500,000 of monthly crypto volume, which almost no merchant will reach on this channel.
  • – Refunds cost the merchant the blockchain network fee, and there is no way to make a customer whole on a volatile asset at the original price without accepting some loss.
  • – No chargebacks also means no chargeback rights for your customer, which shifts dispute handling entirely onto your own refund policy and support team.

Fees in detail

  • Online rate: Published and tiered by monthly volume: 2% + 25 cents per transaction under $500,000 USD a month, 1.5% + 25 cents from $500,000 to $999,999,
  • Contract: No published minimum term or long-term commitment for the merchant processing product; pricing is a published tiered rate rather than a negotiated contract for merchants below $500,000 a month.

Standard published rate for a domestic online card payment. Confirm current pricing on BitPay's pricing page.
