Overview

ProPay makes sense when the company you sell for uses it — the account is built to move money between a direct-selling corporation and its distributors, pay commissions, and let a representative take cards at a party or a booth with no underwriting wait. Chosen on its own merits, it is a weak offer: the rate is described only as an 'up to' ceiling, the annual fee auto-renews and is the single most common complaint, every bank transfer costs money, and processing caps mean a good month can leave funds sitting behind a risk review. Owners of ordinary small businesses should look at the site's higher-graded aggregators or a plain merchant account before this.

Best for: Direct-selling distributors and independent consultants whose parent company has a ProPay integration; occasional or seasonal sellers who prefer one annual charge to a monthly fee; software platforms and direct-selling corporations that want a sponsored payment-facilitator programme (ProPay's 'ProFac') with sub-merchant onboarding, SplitPay and commission disbursement built in.

Strengths

  • + Built for the direct-selling channel: distributor self-enrolment, funds routed between a corporate entity and its representatives, commission disbursement and SplitPay from one transaction, with a parent that, since its January 2026 purchase of Worldpay, says it serves more than six million merchant locations.
  • + No monthly fee, no monthly minimum and no cancellation fee — a single annual membership, which suits occasional and seasonal sellers who would otherwise pay twelve months of fees for three months of sales.
  • + Money can be spent straight from the ProPay balance on a prepaid Mastercard, and ProPay-to-ProPay transfers are free, which is why direct-selling companies use it to pay their field.
  • + Long-standing, sponsored and disclosed: processing since 1997, a registered ISO of PNC Bank, ETA's ISO of the Year in 2010, and inside TSYS/Global Payments since December 2012.

Trade-offs

  • – The public rate table is empty. As read in September 2026, the Features & Pricing page shows row labels and no numbers, and the official schedule gives only ceilings — 'up to 3.50% plus $0.35' and an annual fee 'up to $299.95' — with a note that fees vary by affiliation.
  • – A poor complaint record for its size: 240 BBB complaints in three years, 143 closed in the last twelve months, and an average customer review score of 1.02 out of 5 from 106 reviews, dominated by held funds, unrefunded auto-renewed annual fees and support that cannot reach the back office.
  • – Processing caps and holds are structural. Single-transaction and monthly limits are set by account type and history, exceeding a soft limit disables bank transfers pending a risk review, and reserve deposits for higher limits are held for six to seven months after you reduce them.
  • – Every step to your bank costs something — a transfer fee of up to $0.35, $0.35 per refund, $15 per chargeback, $50 to reactivate an expired account — and settlement is two-stage (2–3 days to the ProPay balance, then 2–4 business days to the bank).
  • – Still a named defendant in the TelexFree litigation over roughly $110 million it processed for a pyramid scheme in 2012–14; class certification was denied in April 2025 but the case is in its twelfth year.
  • – The marketing site has gone: propay.com now redirects to the login portal and the industry pages return 404, so a prospective merchant cannot read a product description, let alone a price, before signing up.
