Overview

If your customers are in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa or a dozen other African markets, Flutterwave is the pragmatic default: one API, published rates, every local method from M-Pesa to USSD, and the deepest licence set of any African fintech. It is not a US or European merchant account — the US entity is a money transmitter for the Send remittance app, not a card acquirer — and it is an aggregator, so your funds sit with Flutterwave and settlement can pause while compliance asks for documents. Price international cards at 4.8% into your margins, keep KYC current, and do not treat it as your only rail in a market where it operates through partners rather than its own licence.

Best for: African businesses and foreign companies selling into Africa that need local cards, bank transfers, USSD, mobile money and M-Pesa through one integration at published rates; marketplaces and platforms that need bulk payouts to African bank accounts and mobile wallets; small sellers who want a free Store, payment links and invoices without a developer.

Strengths

  • + Published, simple pricing per country — 2% on local cards, transfers and USSD in Nigeria, 2.9% mobile money in Kenya, 2.9% + R1 in South Africa — with no setup or monthly fee and next-business-day local settlement.
  • + The widest African method and market coverage from one integration: licences or authorisations in 34 countries, 30-plus currencies, and every local method from M-Pesa and USSD to bank transfer and POS.
  • + The strongest licence set among African fintechs — Nigeria's switching-and-processing licence (2022), a Nigerian microfinance-bank licence (2026) and 34 US state money-transmitter licences — and a claimed Trustpilot profile that replies to every negative review.
  • + Scale and backing: more than a billion transactions and over $50 billion processed, over $500 million raised, and a $3.2 billion valuation in June 2026 with Ripple as a strategic investor.
  • + Free tools for small sellers — Store, payment links, invoices — and bulk payouts for platforms, so one account covers both collecting and paying.

Trade-offs

  • – International cards cost 4.8% since November 2024 (up from 3.8%), which is expensive by any standard and is the rate most foreign-selling merchants actually pay.
  • – A regulatory record to read: Kenya's Assets Recovery Agency froze about $52 million of Flutterwave funds in 2022 on money-laundering suspicions before withdrawing its cases in 2023 with the funds released, and Flutterwave still operates in Kenya through partners because its own licence application, filed in 2019, has not been granted.
  • – A 'technical glitch' discovered in October 2023 let POS merchants move about ₦19 billion (around $24 million) off the platform; Flutterwave said no customer funds were lost and obtained a court order in February 2024 to recover the money from more than 6,000 accounts.
  • – Trustpilot is polarised — 4.2 from 958 reviews but a third of them one star — with merchants describing settlement holds during compliance reviews, repeated document requests and slow resolution.
  • – It is an aggregator, not a merchant account: funds flow through Flutterwave's licence, and it does not offer card acquiring in the United States, the UK or the EU despite the San Francisco address.
