Overview

KOMOJU is a practical way for a business outside Japan, or a small Japanese shop, to accept konbini, bank transfer, PayPay and Japanese cards through one integration and one contract, at prices it actually publishes. The breadth of Japanese and Asian payment methods is the reason to use it. We grade it B- because the headline rates come before 10% consumption tax and before per-payout transfer fees, the standard payout in the terms is monthly, with funds arriving up to a month after the month closes, the terms bind you for a year and let KOMOJU hold money for six months when it sees chargeback risk, and there is too little independent merchant feedback to judge its service with confidence.

Best for: Online sellers, including game, software and digital-content businesses and overseas brands, that need Japanese shoppers to be able to pay by konbini, bank transfer, PayPay, carrier billing or JCB, and Japanese shops that want one provider for online payments and a free in-store terminal.

Strengths

  • + Broad coverage of Japanese payment methods, including konbini cash, bank transfer, Pay-easy, PayPay and carrier billing, through one integration
  • + Published per-method rates with no setup or monthly fee
  • + Also covers South Korean, Chinese, Southeast Asian, European and Brazilian local methods
  • + Registered with Japan's METI as a card merchant-contract company (Kanto (ku) No. 145)
  • + Free in-store terminal in Japan, with Visa and Mastercard at 2.88%
  • + Bank transfer costs 1.4%, well under the card rate

Trade-offs

  • – Japan-registered merchants pay 10% consumption tax on top of the listed rates, so 3.25% on cards is about 3.58% in practice
  • – Each payout costs ¥220 to ¥410 in Japan and ¥2,500 (or $25, €25) to an overseas account
  • – The terms' standard payout is monthly, by the end of the following month; weekly is the fastest bank payout
  • – The marketing says you can cancel anytime, but the terms set a one-year auto-renewing term and three months' notice to end early
  • – Terms allow a six-month payout hold when KOMOJU sees chargeback risk, and fees are not refunded on refunds or chargebacks
  • – Digital-content sales on some wallets cost 8.4% to 15%, which the pricing page shows only as "3.5%~" style ranges
