Overview

$46

Best for: Micro and small businesses in Mexico — market stalls, food vendors, shops, salons and independent professionals — that sell mainly in person, want instant access to their money without a bank account, and value a large, established brand that many customers already use to pay by QR or wallet balance.

Strengths

  • + Instant access to card-present money at 3.50% + IVA on debit, credit and vouchers on Point readers, Point Tap and Tap to Pay on iPhone — with advertised volume tiers down to 2.99% + IVA above MX$100,000 a month — and no monthly fee or fixed term.
  • + Very low entry cost: readers from MX$89 on promotion (MX$349–399 for standalone 4G terminals), free Tap to Pay on Android and iPhone, and no RFC or bank account needed to start.
  • + Cheap QR payments when customers pay with their Mercado Pago balance (0.99%) or a debit card (1.69%), backed by one of Latin America's largest consumer wallets — 88 million fintech monthly active users in Q2 2026.
  • + A full toolkit from one account: readers, phone-based Tap to Pay, QR, payment links, Checkout Pro and API, meses sin intereses, card-free installments via Mercado Crédito, subscriptions, loans and a free debit card.
  • + Regulated and established: the merchant's contract is with an aggregator supervised by the CNBV and Banco de México, part of a Nasdaq-listed group operating in Mexico since 2004, and the app averages 4.9 across about 1.2 million ratings on Apple's Mexican App Store.

Trade-offs

  • – The MX$4 fixed fee on payment links and online checkout, plus IVA, makes small online sales expensive: on a MX$100 sale at the instant rate about MX$8.69 goes to fees.
  • – Meses sin intereses surcharges run from 4.69% at 3 months to 27.29% at 24, plus IVA — a MX$10,000 Point sale at 12 months nets about MX$8,099.
  • – The terms let Mercado Pago keep funds 'indefinitely' unavailable on strong suspicion of fraud or breach, deduct chargebacks even when the merchant supplies evidence, terminate without notice for breach, and change the terms on ten days' notice.
  • – Pricing pages disagree on details: the Point terminals page advertises volume tiers the help center doesn't list, the middle online payout period is 7 days for links and 14 for Checkout, cash payments cost 3.79% + MX$4, 3.49% or 3.19% depending on the page, and the Checkout page's headline card rates leave out the MX$4 fee.
  • – Public reviews outside the app stores are poor: Trustpilot's global Mercado Pago profile scores 1.5 from 382 reviews and the Mexican profile 2.5 from 13, with blocked accounts and held money among the recurring complaints.

Fees in detail

  • Online rate: 3.49% + MX$4 + IVA (instant payout)
  • International: Mercado Pago's Mexican terms require every payment to be made in Mexican pesos, converting US-dollar amounts at the previous day's closing s
  • Disputes: The Mexican terms list no separate chargeback fee, but the merchant bears the full disputed amount 'plus any other applicable cost or expens
