Overview

$44

Best for: Canadian retailers, restaurants, salons, auto shops and other service businesses processing enough volume to make interchange-plus worthwhile; merchants who want gift cards, loyalty and review management from the same vendor as their terminal; and businesses that want to leave without an exit fee if the relationship does not work.

Strengths

  • + Interchange-plus pricing with published starting rates — in-person credit from 1.26% + 5¢, debit from 5¢, online credit from 2.27% + 25¢ — where most Canadian ISOs publish nothing.
  • + No locked-in contract and no cancellation fee, on Paystone's own pricing page, with a $5 monthly account fee for in-person merchants.
  • + Next-business-day deposits as standard.
  • + An owned product suite rather than resold add-ons: DataCandy gift and loyalty, NiceJob review management and the Ackroo platform bought in 2025.
  • + Scale for a bank-independent Canadian processor — more than 38,000 business locations and over $10 billion processed annually, by the company's own figures — with sponsorship from U.S. Bank/Elavon and Wells Fargo and partnerships with Global Payments and First Data Canada.
  • + A small complaint footprint: third-party review sites count a handful of BBB complaints in total, all resolved, and a 4.5 rating on Google by the company's own count.

Trade-offs

  • – 'As low as' pricing. The published rates are floors that depend on processing volume, so the actual markup comes out of a quote, and the homepage and pricing page currently disagree on the online rate (2.26% + 10¢ versus 2.27% + 25¢).
  • – Fixed costs add up for a small merchant: a $99 setup fee, $5 a month for the account, $15 a month for the gateway, a terminal rental reviewers put at roughly $30 to $60 a month, and a PCI fee some reviewers report at about $15 a month.
  • – The complaints that exist are about terminal rentals that keep billing and cancellation dates that are unclear — the soft underside of a 'no contracts' promise.
  • – The BBB profile is currently marked 'under review' with no rating or report available, so the A+ accreditation third-party reviewers cite cannot presently be confirmed.
  • – Canada only, and it is a private, acquisitive company that has changed name once and bought six businesses since 2019, so product lines and support teams have been in motion.
