Overview

Merchant One publishes a rate table, which is more than most ISOs do, and its support staff are genuinely well liked. But the published rate is a qualified-tier rate on a tiered plan, the tiers you will actually land in are not published, the contract is reported to run three years with an exit fee of up to $750 per remaining year, and the company's own home page claims it is "not a broker or middleman" while its own footer registers it as an independent sales organization of three banks and its owner has been Fiserv since December 2022. None of that makes it a scam — plenty of merchants are happy — but it means the advertised 0.29% is not a price, it is a floor you will rarely touch, and the only sensible way to buy here is to demand interchange-plus and the termination clause in writing.

Best for: A small US retail or restaurant business that wants a person on the phone rather than a self-serve dashboard, is willing to negotiate interchange-plus rather than accept the tiered default, and reads the termination and lease clauses before signing.

Strengths

  • + Publishes a rate table on the home page — $0.00 setup, 0.29%–1.55% qualified swiped, 0.29%–1.99% qualified keyed, $13.95 per month. Most ISOs publish nothing at all.
  • + States on the same table that interchange-plus is available. If you ask for it and get it in writing, the tiered downgrade problem largely goes away.
  • + Owned by Fiserv since December 2022, so the processing platform underneath is one of the largest in the world rather than a thinly capitalised reseller.
  • + Support gets consistently strong marks from the people who use it: 4.9 on Trustpilot across 27,320 reviews, with named representatives praised by name for being reachable and following through.
  • + Next-day funding is advertised, and a terminal placement program means you may not need to buy hardware outright to get started.
  • + Long operating history for an ISO — incorporated in Florida in November 2002, with a BBB file open since February 2004 — and the company says it serves more than 100,000 customers.

Trade-offs

  • – The headline rate is a qualified-tier rate on a tiered pricing plan. Merchant One publishes the qualified tier and not the mid-qualified or non-qualified tiers, which is where rewards cards, corporate cards and keyed transactions actually land. A 0.29% advertised rate and a 3% effective rate are entirely compatible with each other.
  • – The contract is reported by independent reviewers to run three years, with an early termination fee of up to $750 for each year remaining. Merchant One publishes neither the term nor the fee.
  • – Its own home page says "We're not a broker or middleman... you'll be dealing directly with the source," while the footer on the same page registers it as "a registered Independent Sales Organization of KeyBank, N.A.; Citizens Bank, N.A.; and Pathward, N.A." An ISO is by definition an intermediary, and since December 2022 the company has been owned by Fiserv.
  • – The review picture is contradictory in a way that should slow you down: 4.9 on Trustpilot across 27,320 solicited post-support reviews, against 1.02 out of 5 across 56 customer reviews on the BBB profile, and 198 BBB complaints in three years.
  • – "We've been in business 20 years" has been on the home page long enough to be wrong — the company was incorporated on 26 November 2002, making it 23 years old. A stale number on the front page is a small thing, but it is the same page you are being asked to take the rate table from.
  • – Equipment is offered on lease. Processing leases are frequently separate, non-cancellable agreements with a third-party lessor that survive the closure of the merchant account, and they are the most common way a cheap-looking deal becomes expensive.

Fees in detail

  • Online rate: Ecommerce is offered but not separately priced on the site. Merchant One states that interchange-plus is available on request — ask for it,
  • Contract: Not published. Independent reviewers describe a standard three-year agreement on all plans. Equipment is offered on a "Terminal Placement Program" and on lease terms, and equipment leases in this industry are frequently separate, non-cancellable agreements with a different company — read them as two contracts, not one.

Standard published rate for a domestic online card payment. Confirm current pricing on Merchant One's pricing page.
