Overview

Celero is a real, substantial processor with a bank-referral distribution model and a software portfolio that goes beyond payments, and Deluxe paid $625 million for it, which is a market judgement worth something. But this review has to weigh what merchants say against what acquirers pay, and on the merchant side the record is poor: the BBB has withheld a rating pending its evaluation of a pattern of complaints, and the recurring theme is difficulty cancelling and fees that appeared without notice. Add an ownership change that has just completed, and there is more uncertainty here than a small business should have to absorb.

Best for: Small and mid-sized businesses that come to Celero through their own bank's referral programme and value a single provider for processing, business management software and reporting; partners and ISVs looking for an integrated payments platform rather than merchants shopping on price.

Strengths

  • + Real scale rather than a marketing claim: Deluxe's completion announcement put the acquired business at more than 55,000 merchant relationships and 130 bank partners.
  • + Financially substantial — Deluxe's June 2026 announcement cited Celero revenue of more than $200 million in 2025 at a 28% adjusted EBITDA margin, and paid roughly $625 million in cash.
  • + Bank and software-partner distribution means many merchants arrive through an institution they already trust, rather than through a cold-calling agent channel.
  • + Bundles business management software and data reporting with processing, which is more than a bare merchant account for businesses that would otherwise buy both.
  • + Now backed by a long-established public company, which should mean more stability behind the platform than a private roll-up carrying acquisition debt.

Trade-offs

  • – The BBB has withheld a rating entirely while it evaluates a pattern of complaints, and the profile carries a Pattern of Complaints alert. That is a worse signal than a poor letter grade.
  • – The dominant complaint theme is cancellation: merchants describe requests that went unprocessed for months while monthly fees kept being charged.
  • – Merchants also report fees added without notice. The BBB complaint file names a $29.95 monthly security bundle charge and a $119 annual PCI compliance fee among the charges disputed, and one complaint alleges an effective rate far above what was quoted.
  • – No published pricing, contract length or cancellation fee — everything is a quote, and the cancellation figures in circulation come from aggrieved merchants rather than from Celero.
  • – The Deluxe acquisition closed on 31 July 2026, so support organisations, branding and platforms are all subject to integration change over the next year.
  • – The company is only a few years old as an entity, and much of its merchant base arrived through acquisitions rather than being built and serviced in one place.

Fees in detail

  • Contract: Not published by Celero. At least one complaint on file with the BBB refers to a three-year contract whose terms the merchant says were held in a separate document they had not seen. Treat term length as something to establish in writing before signing.
