Overview

CardConnect sells good technology on terms you cannot see in advance, and it has now been accused twice of charging merchants fees their agreements never named. The 2021 settlement was not a nuisance payout — $7.65 million, a class of 110,875 merchants, specific fees identified by name and amount, and an undertaking to make cancellation easier for three years. The July 2024 complaint alleges the same pattern resumed once that window closed. Set against that, CardPointe is a capable platform, CardSecure's tokenisation is genuinely well regarded, and merchants who negotiate hard and read the Program Guide do get workable interchange-plus deals. If a vertical software package you already depend on is integrated with CardPointe, that may be reason enough to be here. Choosing it from a blank sheet, with a market full of providers who publish their prices, is harder to justify.

Best for: Merchants whose existing business software is already integrated with the CardPointe gateway, and larger accounts with the leverage and the patience to negotiate interchange-plus in writing, demand the Program Guide up front and audit their statements every quarter.

Strengths

  • + CardPointe is a genuinely capable platform. In-store, online, mobile and virtual terminal acceptance, with transaction management and reporting in a single console, is a complete offering rather than a thin reseller wrapper.
  • + CardSecure's tokenisation and point-to-point encryption are the technical high point, are patented, and are a large part of why software vendors embed CardConnect. Keeping card data out of your own systems is a real reduction in PCI scope.
  • + Deep software integration. CardConnect markets a library of 300-plus apps and integrations and publishes proper developer documentation, so if your ERP, practice-management or vertical package supports it, the integration work is largely already done.
  • + Full access to the Clover hardware and app ecosystem, since both brands sit inside Fiserv — useful if you want Clover but also want an interchange-plus conversation rather than Clover's own packaged pricing.
  • + Interchange-plus pricing is genuinely available through some sales channels, which is more than several flat-rate competitors offer, and it is the right structure for a merchant with volume and the willingness to negotiate.
  • + Backed by Fiserv, one of the largest payment processors in the world. Whatever else is true, the underlying acquiring is not going to disappear, and CardConnect is a registered ISO of Citizens Bank, KeyBank, Pathward, PNC and Wells Fargo.

Trade-offs

  • – A $7.65 million class action settlement over undisclosed fees, given final approval in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania in February 2021. The class covered 110,875 merchants, of whom 43,837 were still customers, and the specific charges at issue were named in the settlement: a $9.00 annual Pulse Fee, a $15.00 monthly CardPointe Fee and a $19.95 monthly PCI Non Comp Fee.
  • – A second proposed class action filed 11 July 2024 in the same court (Richard E. Obringer PAC dba Advanced Surgical Associates, No. 2:24-cv-03034) alleging the same conduct resumed — a $199.99 "Annual Compliance SVC Fee", a $215 "Annual Fee Security Bundle" and a $200 "Annual Membership Fee" imposed in February 2024, none of them in the merchant agreement. These are allegations that have not been proven, but the pattern of allegation is what a prospective merchant needs to weigh.
  • – No published pricing of any kind, combined with a sales-agent distribution model. The same product is sold by many independent agents on different terms, so there is no benchmark you can hold your quote against and no way to know whether you got a fair deal.
  • – Contract terms are agent-dependent. Some merchants get month-to-month with no early termination fee; others get multi-year agreements with automatic renewal and a cancellation charge — Merchant Maverick cites a $750 example. You cannot know which you have been offered without reading the clause.
  • – Cancellation is the most consistently reported problem across every public channel. Phone cancellations that do not take effect, a written-notice requirement to a specific address, and billing continuing roughly 30 days past the request all recur in Trustpilot reviews and BBB complaints. The settlement's three-year undertaking to ease cancellation after CardConnect-initiated fee increases dates from February 2021 and has lapsed.
  • – Documented mid-contract rate increases. Merchant Cost Consulting records a 0.10% discount-rate rise plus $0.05 on authorization fees in September 2023, and a further 0.10% + $0.05 in April 2024 across Visa, Mastercard, Discover, Amex full acquiring and PIN debit — applied unevenly across the book.

Fees in detail

  • Online rate: CardConnect publishes no rates anywhere. There is no rate card, no entry-level plan and no self-serve signup — every quote comes from a sale
  • Disputes: Not published; set per account by the sales agent.
  • Contract: There is no standard term, and that is the honest answer rather than an evasion. CardConnect accounts are written by independent sales agents and ISOs, so the term, the auto-renewal clause and the cancellation charge all depend on who sold you the account. Reported outcomes range from month-to-month with no early termination fee to multi-year with automatic renewal.

Standard published rate for a domestic online card payment. Confirm current pricing on CardConnect's pricing page.
