Overview

Deluxe is a stable, well-capitalised processor that a bank or software company can comfortably partner with, and a merchant who negotiates interchange-plus pricing and a month-to-month term in writing will probably be fine. The default offer is the problem: unpublished tiered pricing, a three-year agreement that renews itself, and a cancellation fee — the exact package the FTC took First American to court over in 2022. Sign only after you have a written fee schedule and have struck the auto-renewal and termination clauses, or choose a processor whose published pricing needs no negotiation.

Best for: Small and mid-sized US retailers, service businesses, nonprofits and government offices that already bank with a Deluxe partner institution, want a countertop terminal, virtual terminal and ACH from one vendor with round-the-clock phone support, and are prepared to negotiate the contract rather than sign the form.

Strengths

  • + Scale and stability: after the Celero acquisition closed on 31 July 2026, Deluxe expects to process more than $70 billion a year for roughly 210,000 merchants, which it says places it among the ten largest non-bank acquirers in the United States, with an NYSE-listed parent (DLX) that reports the segment's numbers every quarter.
  • + Round-the-clock support: 24/7/365 US phone support, and First American's call centre has won industry awards; BBB complaint volume is low for a book this size, at nine in three years.
  • + One vendor for in-store terminals, POS, a virtual terminal, hosted online checkout, mobile acceptance and ACH, plus Deluxe's receivables and check products for businesses that still take paper.
  • + Sold largely through banks and software platforms rather than cold-calling, and the sponsor bank (Fifth Third) and the corporate parent are both public and easy to check.

Trade-offs

  • – No published pricing of any kind — no rates, monthly fees, PCI fee, chargeback fee or termination fee — and the default model reported by third-party reviewers is tiered pricing, the least transparent structure in the industry.
  • – The standard First American agreement is a three-year term that renews automatically, with an early-termination fee reported at up to $495; the FTC's 2022 complaint alleged the online enrolment obscured exactly these terms.
  • – In July 2022 First American Payment Systems settled an FTC action alleging false savings claims, hidden three-year terms and $495 exit fees, withdrawals after consent was withdrawn and 'zombie charges' under other names; $4.9 million was refunded to 1,137 businesses in 2024. The conduct predates Deluxe's ownership by a year, but the same contracts and sales channels are what Deluxe bought.
  • – Brand confusion: statements, BBB records and the sponsor disclosure still say First American Payment Systems, L.P., the website says Deluxe Merchant Services, and Celero and TransNational are now being folded in — expect the name on your paperwork to differ from the one you were sold.
  • – Recent BBB complaints describe unexplained debits, fees added to inactive accounts and difficulty reaching a manager, the same themes the FTC order addressed.
