Overview

Vagaro's processing is the rare embedded offer where the numbers are all on the page: two plans, a threshold, the pass-throughs named, and next-business-day funding by default. For a salon or studio doing most of its volume at the counter, 2.29% + $0.19 on the large-merchant plan is a good in-person rate, the $10 a month buys it back quickly, and the free marketplace listing compares well with Fresha's 20% new-client charge. The catch is the 3.5% + $0.19 keyed rate, which Vagaro applies to every online booking deposit, card on file, membership renewal and package — the transactions a modern salon runs on — and which cannot be surcharged back to the client. A business that sells memberships online will pay more with Vagaro than the headline suggests, and the BBB record of double charges and hardware disputes is worth reading before buying a $380 PayPro. Take it for the software and the in-person rate; model the keyed rate against your online and recurring volume before you assume it is cheap.

Best for: Salons, barbershops, spas, med spas, nail studios, gyms and yoga or pilates studios in the US that take most payments in person and want booking, POS, forms, marketing and payroll in one subscription; booth renters and suites that need rent collection and per-calendar pricing; businesses that want a free marketplace listing and Google, Apple Maps and Yelp booking without paying per new client.

Strengths

  • + A complete published rate card — two plans by volume, keyed and Tap to Phone rates, both chargeback tiers, the FANF and Mastercard pass-throughs and the BNPL and ACH fees — which is more than most vertical platforms disclose.
  • + 2.29% + $0.19 in person on the large-merchant plan for $10 a month is a competitive counter rate for a salon or studio, and small merchants pay nothing monthly for 2.6% + $0.10.
  • + Next-business-day deposits by default with a choice of batch time, and same-day or instant payouts at 1.75% for businesses that qualify.
  • + No contract, no cancellation fee and no processing term; the software is month to month and the card reader is free with a merchant account.
  • + The marketplace listing is free in the US, and the 20% new-client commission applies only when you opt into Fill My Books campaigns — a different model from Fresha, which charges 20% on every new client it sends.
  • + Fees pass through PNC Bank as the sponsor, with Vagaro Merchant Services a registered ISO, and the software adds rent collection, memberships, forms, payroll and Affirm instalments that a generic processor would not.

Trade-offs

  • – 3.5% + $0.19 on every keyed, online, card-on-file and membership charge, on both plans, with no surcharge or convenience fee permitted — the rate that applies to online deposits and recurring revenue, which is where salons increasingly earn.
  • – The BBB rates Vagaro B+ despite accreditation, with 34 complaints in three years and a customer review score of 1.09 out of 5 from 57 reviews; 2026 complaints describe clients charged two and three times, unresolved PayPro warranty claims, and billing continuing after a renter left a salon that required Vagaro.
  • – Card-brand pass-throughs make the effective cost harder to predict than a flat rate: FANF can reach $45 a month on $40,000 to $199,999 of card-not-present volume, and a business with both card-present and card-not-present sales pays both FANF schedules.
  • – Deposits are refused to a list of online-only banks including Chime, Cash App and GO2bank, and instant payouts require a bank on RTP or FedNow and a $2,500 processing history.
  • – The base price is rising — the pricing page shows $30 struck through to $23.99 'for the first six months' — and premium features, the large-merchant plan and marketing plans are billed forward through the end of the cycle even after you switch them off.

Fees in detail

  • Online rate: 3.5% + $0.19 per transaction on both plans. Vagaro treats every online payment as keyed-in: online booking deposits and prepayments, purchas
  • Disputes: $$7.50 on the first chargeback; a further $15 Mastercard scheme fee if a provisional credit is reversed after a failed defence
  • Contract: Month to month; no processing term
