Overview

Clio Payments is a sensible default for a firm already running on Clio Manage. It takes cards, eChecks and digital wallets inside the billing workflow, posts payments to the right bill and matter, and keeps fees and chargebacks out of the trust account, which is the compliance point that matters most to a law firm. The flat 2.95% card rate is easy to budget but not cheap: there is no volume discount on the published price, the rate has risen from the 2.8% LawNext reported Clio charging in 2022, and American Express costs 3.75%. We grade it B because the pricing is simple but incompletely published (no Canadian rates, and Clio's pages show some firms get offers off the list price), it cannot be bought without a Clio subscription, and Clio's BBB record shows unanswered billing complaints.

Best for: US and Canadian law firms already on Clio Manage, especially solo and small firms that take retainers into trust and want payments, trust ledgers and billing in one place without a second vendor.

Strengths

  • + Built into Clio Manage, so payments post to the right bill, matter and trust ledger with no separate integration
  • + Trust handling a firm can rely on: trust payments arrive in full, and fees, chargebacks and dispute fees always come out of the operating account
  • + Flat published card rate of 2.95% with no per-transaction fee and no pass-through network fees, so fees are predictable
  • + No extra monthly fee for payments on any Clio Manage plan
  • + Fees can be deducted once a month instead of from each deposit, which simplifies reconciliation

Trade-offs

  • – Only available with a paid Clio Manage subscription, from $49 per user per month
  • – The flat 2.95% rate has no published volume discount, and it has risen from the 2.8% Clio charged in 2022
  • – American Express costs 3.75% (3.5% only for firms switching from LawPay), and no Canadian rates are published
  • – In Canada there is no eCheck or ACH option; clients pay by card, debit or digital wallet
  • – Clio's BBB rating is F, with unanswered complaints about billing after cancellation and one review saying Clio Payments was holding a firm's funds

Fees in detail
