Overview

Mindbody is bought for the software and the consumer marketplace attached to it, not for the processing, and that is the right way to judge it. The product is deep — scheduling, memberships, staff management, retail, automated marketing, and a consumer app that genuinely sends new clients — and the payments are competently built on Stripe Connect with sensible payout options. What earns the caution is commercial conduct rather than technology: the company publishes its processing rates for twenty regions and refuses to publish them for the United States, its consumer-app bookings carry a 20% marketplace fee on top of 3.5%, and its own terms leave a departing customer liable for the balance of the term with nothing refundable. A studio that wants Mindbody's demand engine should expect to pay for it and should get the US rate, the term length and the exit terms in writing before signing.

Best for: Established fitness, wellness and beauty businesses — particularly multi-location studios and spas — that want a mature scheduling and membership platform, are willing to negotiate a quoted contract, and value the client acquisition the Mindbody consumer app provides.

Strengths

  • + The deepest feature set in wellness software: scheduling, memberships and contracts, retail point of sale, staff management, automated marketing and reporting in one platform, with a branded website and booking widgets included from the entry tier.
  • + A genuine client-acquisition channel — the consumer Mindbody app and sister brand ClassPass put a studio's open capacity in front of consumers already searching for classes, at a scale no competing platform matches.
  • + Payments are built on Stripe Connect, so the supported methods are current — Tap to Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna, SEPA, Bacs, iDEAL and more — and settlement can be set to daily, weekly or monthly.
  • + Processing rates are published in detail for around twenty regions outside the US, including card-present, card-not-present and bank-debit pricing, which makes cost predictable for Canadian, UK, EU and APAC operators.
  • + Available in more than forty countries with local payment methods and local bank-debit rails, which suits multi-country operators that would otherwise run several systems.

Trade-offs

  • – US and Australian processing rates are not published at all — Mindbody's own rates article prints an email address where the numbers should be, while listing exact figures for every other region.
  • – Bookings through the consumer app carry a 20% marketplace fee on a new client's first purchase on top of a 3.5% transaction fee, an effective first-sale cost far above ordinary card processing.
  • – The terms of service make early exit expensive: fees are non-refundable, thirty days' notice is required, and leaving inside a subscription term leaves the customer liable for the remaining months.
  • – Public sentiment is poor. The Better Business Bureau profile carries a 1-out-of-5 average across 35 customer reviews and 38 complaints in three years, and the A- rating is itself reduced for failing to respond to a complaint — though a large share of that traffic is consumers disputing studio membership billing rather than merchants.
  • – Only the Starter price is listed; the two higher tiers, Booker and any negotiated term are quoted, so total cost cannot be established without a sales conversation.
