Overview

Zeller is the cleanest pricing in Australian small-business payments and it backs it up with good hardware and a genuinely useful free account. A café or shop pays A$99 for a terminal, 1.4% on every card with no Amex premium and no per-transaction cents, nothing a month, and sees the money in its Zeller account the same night. That is a real improvement on the rental-plus-blended-rate deals the banks still write, and it is why the company grew to a unicorn faster than any Australian startup before it. The caveats are the ones that come with any fintech acquirer: it decides on risk itself and it does freeze funds, the Zeller account is a stored-value facility at Cuscal rather than a government-guaranteed bank deposit, online acceptance is priced higher than in person, and the whole thing is available in exactly two countries. B+ reflects a product that is better than the incumbents on price and simplicity and not yet proven on what happens when a large or unusual payment triggers a review.

Best for: Australian cafés, restaurants, retailers, trades and service businesses that take most of their money at a counter or on site and want a flat rate with no rental, no contract and no Amex surcharge to explain. It suits new businesses especially — the transaction account, debit card and terminal are set up together in a day — and hospitality venues that want the terminal, the POS and the till in one box. From April 2026 it is also an option for UK small businesses that want a 1.3% domestic card rate and an outright-purchase terminal.

Strengths

  • + One flat 1.4% on every in-person card, American Express included, with no per-transaction cents, no monthly rental, no minimum term and no settlement fee — the simplest schedule in the Australian market and published in full.
  • + Hardware bought outright at A$99 on promotion, and a 1.2% rate when payments run through Zeller's own free POS software on the Terminal 2.
  • + Takings settle into the free Zeller Transaction Account nightly and can be spent on the debit card at once, with next-business-day transfer to an outside bank; the account and card cost nothing.
  • + No chargeback fee, whatever the outcome — a rare omission from a fee schedule.
  • + More of the stack is Zeller's own than most challengers manage: an Australian financial services licence, principal membership of Mastercard and its own terminal hardware and POS.
  • + Well funded and growing: A$181 million raised including a A$100 million Series B in March 2022 at a valuation above A$1 billion, more than 100,000 Australian businesses, and a UK launch in April 2026 with the same no-rental, flat-rate model at 1.3%.

Trade-offs

  • – Funds holds are the recurring complaint: 17% of Trustpilot reviews are one-star, and the pattern is a large payment triggering a freeze, a request for documents, and slow or generic replies while the money sits.
  • – The Zeller Account is a stored-value facility, not a bank deposit: Zeller's own product disclosure statement says the balance is held in a segregated account at Cuscal and is not protected by the Financial Claims Scheme.
  • – Online is priced like everyone else: invoices at 1.7% plus 25¢ and the virtual terminal at 1.75% plus 25¢ are ordinary, and international cards on invoices cost 2.9% plus 25¢. The headline 1.4% is an in-person rate.
  • – Available only in Australia and, since April 2026, the United Kingdom, where the operation is months old with a small team.
  • – Custom rates start at A$250,000 a year of card volume, so a mid-sized venue is paying the same 1.4% as a market stall until it gets there; interchange-plus is not offered at all.
  • – The terminal, account, cards and POS are all Zeller's, which is the appeal and the lock-in: leaving means new hardware and a new account, not just a new merchant ID.

Fees in detail

  • Online rate: Australia: invoices 1.7% + A$0.25 on domestic cards (1.1% promotional for new customers onboarding 24 August–31 October 2026), 2.9% + A$0.25
  • International: Australia: 1.4% in person applies to all cards; international cards on invoices 2.9% + A$0.25. UK: 1.99% in person, 2.4% on invoices and MOT
  • Disputes: None — Zeller charges no fee to manage a chargeback, whatever the outcome
