Platform & Vertical SaaS · Established UK retailers, restaurants and hospitality groups that want a bank-owned acquirer with next-day …
Barclaycard Payments is what a bank-owned acquirer looks like: reliable rails, next-working-day settlement as standard, an authorisation service it says ran at 100% uptime in 2025, and the reassurance that the company holding your money is Barclays Bank PLC. Against that, it publishes no prices, its traditional terminals still come on 18-month auto-renewing contracts with an exit fee, and its support has been the subject of the same complaint — nobody answers — for years. The Brookfield partnership and a new chief executive from Square are meant to fix the second half of that; as of September 2026 they have not yet had time to. For a merchant who wants a big-bank acquirer and is prepared to negotiate, it is a sound choice. For a small business comparing published rates, the fintech acquirers are simpler and often cheaper. That is a B-: solid infrastructure, dated commercial terms, and a service record that has to improve before the grade does.
Best for: Established UK retailers, restaurants and hospitality groups that want a bank-owned acquirer with next-day settlement and multicurrency capability; businesses already banking with Barclays that want one relationship; merchants switching from another provider who can use the up-to-£1,000 contribution to exit fees; and mobile traders who want a no-contract pocket reader from a name customers recognise.
