Overview

Windcave is a serious, long-established payments business with real engineering depth: its own gateway, its own terminals and its own acquiring in six regions, sold as one integration. It suits mid-size and larger merchants, especially unattended and multi-country operators, who will negotiate a contract anyway. We hold it at B- because nothing about the price is public, its merchant FAQ describes a 36-month acquiring commitment backed by a liquidated-damages exit fee, and the little public feedback from merchants is negative about billing, cancellation and support response times.

Best for: Parking, vending, kiosk, EV charging and other unattended operators; mid-size and enterprise retailers and hospitality groups in New Zealand and Australia; and businesses that want one payments provider across several countries.

Strengths

  • + One provider for the gateway, terminals and acquiring, across New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Canada, the EU and the US
  • + Designs and builds its own terminals, including a deep range of unattended readers for parking, vending and kiosks
  • + The gateway also works with merchant accounts from other acquirers, so you are not forced to move your acquiring
  • + Interchange-plus and interchange-plus-plus pricing available in several markets, not just blended rates
  • + Next-business-day settlement in most cases, with custom cut-off times
  • + Long track record: trading since 1999, with 24/7 support listed

Trade-offs

  • – No published pricing for the gateway, terminals or merchant services
  • – The merchant FAQ cites a 36-month term, and the published terms set a liquidated-damages exit fee of at least NZ$400, A$400, £400 or €400 per facility
  • – The gateway charges for declined transactions as well as approved ones
  • – Chargebacks can carry a NZ$25, A$25, £25 or €25 fee on top of the disputed amount
  • – All eight Trustpilot reviews, as of October 2026, are one-star, citing billing after the contract ended, an exit penalty and slow support
  • – A DDoS attack on 5 February 2023 disrupted card payments at retailers across New Zealand

Fees in detail

  • Disputes: Windcave's New Zealand, Australian, UK and EU terms (clause 33.1) let it charge NZ$25, A$25, £25 or €25 per chargeback at its discretion. Th
