Overview

Tyl is a credible, bank-run option for a UK small business that wants low published rates on everyday consumer cards, next-business-day settlement and a phone line open seven days a week. Its 1.39% + 5p rate on UK and European personal cards is published up front, and it adds no surcharge for phone, online or international payments. We hold it at B- because the costs that decide whether a contract is a good one are not public: Amex is quoted by industry, larger businesses get a custom price, the chargeback, PCI and early termination fees are not stated anywhere a prospective customer can read them, and the full terms sit behind the customer portal. Card machines come on a 12-month contract, and several recent reviewers say theirs renewed without them realising.

Best for: UK sole traders and small businesses taking mostly UK consumer debit and credit cards, especially those under £50,000 a year in card sales who can use the two published rates, and businesses that want next-business-day settlement backed by a high-street bank.

Strengths

  • + Published small-business rate of 1.39% + 5p on UK and European personal cards, as of October 2026
  • + No published surcharge for phone, online or international card payments, and no fee for refunds
  • + Next-business-day settlement into any UK bank account; you do not need to bank with NatWest
  • + NatWest is the acquirer itself, so the merchant relationship is with a UK bank authorised by the PRA and regulated by the FCA and PRA
  • + Tap to Pay, Pay by Link and the online package are on one-month rolling plans
  • + Support line open Monday to Saturday 8am to midnight and Sunday 9am to 5pm

Trade-offs

  • – Card machines need a 12-month contract, and Tyl's help centre says an early termination fee may apply without stating the amount
  • – Business cards and non-European personal cards cost 1.99% + 5p, and businesses above £50,000 a year get an unpublished custom price
  • – Amex rates, the chargeback handling fee and the SafePay PCI fee are not published; full terms are visible only in the customer portal
  • – Recent Trustpilot one-star reviews describe contracts that renewed automatically, held or reversed funds, and slow complaint handling
  • – Amex is not currently accepted on NatWest Tap to Pay, as of October 2026
