Overview

Verifone is one of the most important companies in payments and one of the least appealing ones to buy a merchant account from. The hardware is genuinely excellent and genuinely everywhere — 40-plus years of it, in 165+ countries — and if you already run Verifone estate, buying acquiring from the same supplier has an obvious logic. But the merchant-facing side does not publish a single acquiring rate, its US BBB profile is an F driven by 16 unanswered complaints, and its own .com Trustpilot page is 1.5 out of 5. The one honest bright spot is 2Checkout, where the pricing is published, plainly stated and payouts are weekly. If Verifone is on your shortlist, it should be because a specific product fits, not because the brand is famous.

Best for: Enterprise and multi-site retailers who already run Verifone terminals and want device estate, gateway and acquiring under one contract; and software and digital-goods companies who want a merchant-of-record to take global tax and compliance off their hands and are willing to pay 3.5%+ for it.

Strengths

  • + The hardware is the reference point for the industry. Verifone has been making payment terminals since 1981, says its solutions are deployed in 165+ countries, and claims 75% of top retailers use them. If you have ever tapped a card at a supermarket or a fuel pump, the odds are good it was a Verifone device.
  • + 2Checkout publishes its prices, in public, with no sales call: 2Sell at 3.5% + $0.35 and 2Subscribe at 4.5% + $0.45 per successful sale. In a market where almost nobody publishes anything, that deserves credit.
  • + 2Checkout is a merchant of record, not just a gateway. It takes on global tax and regulatory compliance, invoicing and 45+ payment methods across 200 countries — real work that a software company would otherwise have to build or buy separately.
  • + Weekly payouts are published for all three self-serve 2Checkout plans, in USD, GBP or EUR, with other currencies on request. A stated payout cadence is more than most processors will commit to in writing before you sign.
  • + One supplier for devices, gateway and acquiring. For a merchant already running Verifone estate, Verifone Payments removes a vendor boundary that is a common source of finger-pointing when a terminal stops settling.
  • + Financial backing and scale are not in question. Francisco Partners, with British Columbia Investment Management Corporation, took Verifone private in April 2018 in a deal valued at about $3.4 billion including net debt, and Verifone says it has invested more than $2.5 billion over the past decade.

Trade-offs

  • – The US BBB profile for the payment-processing entity is an F, not accredited, with 39 complaints filed and 16 recorded as failures to respond. Not answering complaints is a choice, and it is the single most damaging fact in this review.
  • – Verifone's own .com Trustpilot page is 1.5 out of 5 from 88 reviews, 88% of them one-star. The sample is small and self-selecting, but the themes — frozen terminals, unresponsive support, unauthorised renewals — repeat too consistently to dismiss.
  • – No acquiring rate is published anywhere. Verifone Payments is sold entirely through a sales conversation, with no rate card, no indicative range and no statement about whether interchange-plus is available.
  • – No contract length, notice period or termination fee is published for the acquiring business or for device subscriptions — and continued billing after cancellation is one of the most common complaints against the company.
  • – 2Monetize no longer shows a headline rate. It was published, and now reads "tailored pricing"; several third-party pages still quote the old 6.0% + $0.50 figure. If a comparison site shows you a 2Monetize rate, it is out of date.
  • – The 2Checkout published rates are merchant-of-record rates and should not be compared with a merchant-account discount rate. Paying 3.5% + $0.35 to have someone else be the seller of record is a different transaction from paying 2.6% to have your own merchant account.

Fees in detail

  • Online rate: The one place Verifone publishes a number is 2Checkout, its merchant-of-record platform for selling software and digital goods. As of 26 Aug
  • International: 2Checkout sells into 200 countries and territories and supports 45+ payment methods, but says advanced localised methods such as Boleto Banc
  • Contract: Not published for either the acquiring business or hardware. 2Checkout's self-serve plans are sign-up-and-go with no credit card required to open an account.

Standard published rate for a domestic online card payment. Confirm current pricing on Verifone's pricing page.
