Overview

myPOS is the cheapest way for a very small UK business to accept domestic consumer cards and see the money at once: a £39 reader, no monthly fee, 1.10% + 7p, and the funds in your myPOS account the second the customer taps. That combination is hard to beat for a market trader, a taxi or a sole trader. The catch is the rest of the rate card — 2.20% on EEA consumer cards, 2.45% on Amex and 2.85% on business and non-European cards, plus 7p, in person, and 2.90% + 15p on the same online — which turns a cheap terminal into an expensive one for any business whose customers use company cards or come from abroad. The account is e-money, moving money out costs £1.50 a transfer, ten months of inactivity costs £15, and a 13% one-star tail on Trustpilot describes rejected applications with no explanation and support that goes quiet. B: excellent for its core customer, ordinary or worse outside it.

Best for: Sole traders, market and event sellers, taxi drivers, mobile tradespeople, small cafés and shops in the UK and Europe whose customers pay with domestic consumer debit and credit cards, who want to buy a reader for £39 and pay nothing until they use it, and who value having the money instantly on a card they can spend. Businesses in myPOS's continental markets, where it has a large installed base and physical stores.

Strengths

  • + Instant settlement of every card payment into a free e-money account with a business Mastercard, 24 hours a day — myPOS says it was the first to offer it, in 2014, and it remains the defining feature.
  • + The cheapest entry in UK small-business payments: a £39 reader bought outright, no monthly, account or payout fees, and 1.10% + 7p on domestic consumer cards.
  • + The rate card is published in full for businesses under £10,000 a month, including the unflattering rates on business, Amex and foreign cards.
  • + No contract, no minimum term and free account closure; the only recurring charge is a £15 inactivity fee after ten idle months.
  • + Scale and staying power: founded in 2012, more than 400,000 merchants by its own count across 30-plus countries, 15 physical stores, FCA authorisation in the UK, and Advent International as owner since 2024 with acquisitions of UTP in the UK and Toporder in France.
  • + A large, mostly positive review base — 4.2 on Trustpilot from nearly 22,000 reviews, 70% five-star — with praise for onboarding staff and money arriving in seconds, and replies to 97% of negative reviews.

Trade-offs

  • – The headline 1.10% applies to domestic consumer cards only: EEA consumer cards are 2.20% + 7p, American Express 2.45% + 7p and business, corporate and non-EEA cards 2.85% + 7p in person, which is expensive for a B2B or tourist-facing business.
  • – Online is ordinary — 1.30% + 15p domestic, 2.90% + 15p on other cards, and a further 0.5% for mail and telephone orders.
  • – The money lands in an e-money account, not your bank: moving it out costs £1.50 per GBP transfer or £4 by SEPA, the balance is safeguarded rather than FSCS-protected, and the model is designed around leaving it there.
  • – 13% of Trustpilot reviews are one-star, and the recurring themes are applications rejected without explanation, device deliveries running past twenty days, disputed rental agreements in some markets and support that is hard to reach when something goes wrong.
  • – Rates above £10,000 a month are a bespoke quote, so a growing business loses the published price just as volume would earn a better one.
  • – A £15 inactivity fee after ten months without a transaction, unusual for a pay-as-you-go reader, and one that catches seasonal sellers.
