Overview

For the narrow set of organisations it is built for — a university collecting tuition from forty countries, a hospital system with a large self-pay book, a tour operator or hotel group taking deposits from abroad — Flywire is the specialist, and its scale, its 140-plus currencies and its vertical software are real advantages that a general acquirer will not match. It is not a merchant account, it does not publish prices, and the buyer is an institution negotiating a contract rather than a shop owner comparing rates. Grade it as what it is: a strong, growing, now profitable platform with a payer-facing experience that draws a steady one-star tail about delays and refunds, a pending shareholder lawsuit that is about disclosure rather than the product, and a sanctions self-report it says will not be material. That is a B — good at its job, with enough open questions that a treasurer should read the contract and the 10-Q before signing.

Best for: Universities, colleges and schools with a meaningful international student body; hospital and health systems that want a patient-payment and payment-plan layer on top of their billing; hotels, tour operators and travel companies collecting deposits and balances across borders; and finance teams invoicing overseas business customers who would rather receive local-currency transfers than chase wires.

Strengths

  • + Genuine cross-border reach — more than 140 currencies and 240-plus countries and territories, with payers paying by local method in local currency and the institution receiving reconciled, identified funds.
  • + Scale and durability: $37.6 billion processed in 2025, $623 million of revenue, GAAP net income in each of the last two years, and about 5,300 clients, so this is not a start-up that might disappear with the funds in transit.
  • + Vertical software that most acquirers do not have — payment plans and patient billing in healthcare, admissions and agent payments in education, hotel authorisations through Sertifi, B2B collections through Invoiced.
  • + Payer protections that are unusual for the category: the exchange rate is quoted up front and held until the due date, the total is shown before confirmation, and a Best Price Guarantee applies to eligible bank transfers.
  • + Regulated: registered with FinCEN as a money services business, with money-transmitter licences in 46 US jurisdictions through Flywire Global Corp., and audited financials filed quarterly as a public company.
  • + Trustpilot 4.0 from about 3,150 reviews with 68% five-star, and the company replies to 99% of negative reviews, typically within a day.

Trade-offs

  • – No published pricing at all. Every client agreement is negotiated, and the fee a payer sees varies by country, currency and payment method, so an institution cannot compare Flywire against an acquirer's rate card without going through sales.
  • – A securities class action, Hickman v. Flywire, filed in July 2025 in the Eastern District of New York, alleges the company overstated the sustainability of its growth and understated the effect of student-visa policy; a second amended complaint was filed in May 2026 and Flywire's motion to dismiss was pending as of its August 2026 filing.
  • – Flywire's own internal review found payments that may have come from sanctioned jurisdictions or persons, and it has made voluntary submissions to OFAC that it is still working to resolve — it does not expect a material loss, but the matter is open.
  • – Concentration in international education leaves it exposed to visa and immigration policy in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia, which its own CFO described in August 2026 as a reason to stay prudent about the vertical.
  • – The one-star tail on Trustpilot — 16% of reviews — is about payments stuck in processing, unresponsive local partners and slow refunds, and BBB rates the company A- for failing to respond to a complaint; these are the people paying your invoices.
  • – Not a fit for ordinary merchants: there is no card-acceptance product for retail, restaurants or general e-commerce, and a business that just wants to take cards will find nothing here.
