Overview

$43

Best for: UK retailers, hospitality businesses and service firms with steady card turnover that want a bank-owned acquirer, especially Lloyds and Bank of Scotland business customers who want their card payments and bank account in one place, and businesses that want Clover point-of-sale hardware with UK phone support six days a week.

Strengths

  • + Bank-backed acquirer: the merchant agreement is with Lloyds Bank plc, and the UK Payment Systems Regulator ranks Cardnet among the five largest UK acquirers
  • + Fair exit terms on the merchant agreement: it rolls monthly with one month's notice, and the early-exit fee (£200 under the December 2021 terms) applies only in the first six months
  • + Clover hardware from £21 a month + VAT, plus a Castles Saturn portable terminal at £23, with published rental prices
  • + You do not need a Lloyds bank account to apply for most Cardnet products, and Lloyds markets next-business-day settlement by about 6pm
  • + UK phone support for existing customers from 8am to 9pm, Monday to Saturday
  • + Trustpilot rating of 4.6 from 553 reviews, with 81% five-star, as of October 2026

Trade-offs

  • – No published rate card: every account is quoted, and Lloyds' pricing page gives only worked examples
  • – Many charges are set in each merchant's own schedule, not published: PCI DSS management, chargebacks, international cards, Faster Settlement and American Express acceptance
  • – The December 2021 merchant agreement lists add-on fees: £50 to add an outlet or e-commerce, £150 for multi-currency and £75 an hour for account management after unusual activity
  • – Fees can change on two months' notice (immediately for interchange or scheme-fee changes under the October 2025 terms), and Cardnet can withhold settlement or demand security if it suspects fraud or unexpectedly high volumes
  • – In 2021 the regulator found that merchants with £15,000 to £50 million in annual card turnover got, on average, little or no pass-through of interchange-fee savings, based on data from the five largest acquirers, Cardnet included
  • – UK only, with all pricing in GBP: not an option for US businesses

Fees in detail
