Best for: Existing Lemon Squeezy merchants with a working store and no urgent support needs, who can keep selling while they evaluate Stripe Managed Payments at their own pace; and, at a stretch, a solo developer selling a low-volume digital product who wants a single 5% fee, licence keys and file delivery in one place and can tolerate slow support. Even for that buyer, a platform whose owner is pointing at the exit is a hard recommendation to make.

Strengths

  • + One published price — 5% plus 50 cents, no monthly fee — that covers card processing, currency conversion, global sales-tax and VAT collection and filing, fraud screening and chargeback liability. For a solo developer that replaces four vendors and an accountant.
  • + Merchant-of-record status that is real, not marketing: Lemon Squeezy is the seller on the invoice, registered to file and pay tax in the jurisdictions it sells into, and the party the card networks hold to account when a buyer disputes a charge.
  • + Processing has run on Stripe since inception and the company has been Stripe-owned since July 2024, so the rails under the product are as sound as any in the industry, whatever the state of the layer on top.
  • + A complete toolkit for digital products at no extra charge — licence keys, signed download links, subscriptions with usage billing, discounts, bundles, affiliates, a storefront and email marketing — that competitors either lack or price separately.
  • + No contract, no minimum, no exit fee, and payouts to a bank account or PayPal in what the documentation describes as hundreds of supported countries, free of Lemon Squeezy fees for US bank accounts and 1% elsewhere.
  • + Transparent about its own problems: the chief executive's January 2026 post says plainly that support got slower and updates less frequent while the team built Stripe Managed Payments. That is unusual candour, even if what it discloses is bad news.

Trade-offs

  • – The owner has built and launched the replacement. Stripe Managed Payments — Stripe's own merchant-of-record product, on which the Lemon Squeezy team has been working since the acquisition — is live, and Lemon Squeezy's stated goal is to give its users an easy migration to it. No end date for Lemon Squeezy has been announced, but no commitment to its future has been made either.
  • – An independent record about as bad as Trustpilot can show: 1.2 from 173 reviews, 88% one-star, 96 of them in the last twelve months, with account applications rejected after a week of document requests and support tickets unanswered for days as the dominant complaints. Trustpilot notes the company has not invited reviews recently, which skews the sample negative, but the direction is unambiguous.
  • – Support deterioration confirmed by the company itself. The January 2026 update acknowledges slower support responses and less frequent product updates as a consequence of the team's focus on Stripe Managed Payments.
  • – Slow money. Payouts are created on the 1st and 15th, net sales are held 13 days, transfers go out on the 14th and 28th and take a further one to five days to arrive, with a $50 minimum. A sale on the 4th reaches your bank around the end of the month.
  • – The headline 5% climbs quickly: 6.5% plus 50 cents for an international card sale, 7% plus 50 cents for an international subscription payment, 8% plus 50 cents if the international customer pays by PayPal, and 3% to 5% more on affiliate and abandoned-cart sales. At meaningful volume that is expensive against running Stripe directly with a tax service.
  • – A November 2024 API vulnerability, disclosed by the company, exposed store names, sales figures, product descriptions and the names and email addresses of some users to an outside individual before being patched. Bank details and transaction data were not exposed.
