Overview

$47

Best for: Individual creators and side projects selling low-volume digital products who want a storefront live in an afternoon with no subscription; sellers outside the US who want bank payouts in local currency and a merchant of record handling VAT and GST; anyone testing whether a product sells before investing in a stack of their own.

Strengths

  • + No monthly fee and no contract — a seller pays only when a sale happens, which makes it the lowest-commitment way to start selling a digital product.
  • + Merchant of record since January 2025: Gumroad collects and remits sales tax, VAT and GST worldwide and fronts disputes, so a solo creator has no tax registrations to manage.
  • + Refunds return Gumroad's platform fee, and chargebacks carry no penalty fee beyond the lost sale and processing cost — friendlier than most processors' $15–$25 dispute charges.
  • + Local-currency bank payouts in more than 100 countries, and since mid-2026 buyers see prices in their own currency and, from September, pay in it; Gumroad reported international sales up 16% after the change.
  • + A volume discount that applies automatically: direct sales fall to 5% + $0.50 for the rest of any calendar month once paid sales pass $20,000.
  • + Fully open source under an MIT licence since April 2025, with quarterly public board meetings — an unusual level of transparency for a payments platform.

Trade-offs

  • – Expensive at any normal volume: about 13% plus $0.80 on a direct sale once processing is added, and 30% on a Discover sale, against 5% + $0.50 all-in at Lemon Squeezy or Paddle for the same merchant-of-record service.
  • – A $100 minimum before a scheduled payout, a change creators noticed in March 2026 that Gumroad did not announce in advance; it was $10 before, and some countries have higher local-currency floors.
  • – The public review record is bad — 1.4 on Trustpilot from about 415 reviews, 83% of them one star, dominated by frozen accounts, delayed or missing payouts and unanswered support, with no company replies.
  • – Account reviews and holds are built into the model: new accounts go through a 1–3 week review, payouts pause automatically at a 1% chargeback rate, and the company can impose a 30-day refund policy across a whole account.
  • – Support is chat-first, and the in-app chat only appears after $100 in sales; the old support email was retired in early 2025.
  • – Content restrictions are strict and were tightened abruptly — sexually explicit content was banned in March 2024 under pressure from Stripe and PayPal — and creators in some countries have no payout method at all.

Fees in detail

  • Online rate: 10% + $0.50 platform fee plus 2.9% + $0.30 card processing on direct sales; flat 30% including processing on Discover marketplace sales; 5%
  • Disputes: No penalty fee; the creator loses the sale amount and the processing fee, and Gumroad returns its platform fee
  • Contract: None — pay per sale, cancel any time
