Overview

Inovio is a credible technical option for a merchant whose vertical most gateways will not touch, and being owned by North means there is a large, established acquiring organisation behind it rather than a two-person brokerage. But almost nothing about the commercial relationship is public — no rates, no fees, no contract length, no cancellation terms, no BBB file, and very little independent merchant feedback of any kind. In high-risk processing, where the money is made on the terms rather than the rate card, that is a lot to take on trust.

Best for: Online merchants in specialty verticals — adult, firearms, vape, CBD, nutraceutical, online pharmacy, telemedicine, credit repair, online gaming — who need a gateway with recurring billing, multi-currency and authorisation optimisation, and who value being inside a large group's underwriting appetite over getting the cheapest quote.

Strengths

  • + A real, named vertical list rather than vague 'high-risk welcome' marketing: adult, firearms, e-cigarettes and vape, online gaming, online alcohol, credit repair, CBD, telemedicine, online pharmacy and nutraceutical each have their own page.
  • + Backed by scale. Inovio is a wholly owned brand of North, formerly North American Bancard, one of the larger merchant acquiring groups in the United States — not an independent broker who can disappear.
  • + It is a registered ISO of BMO Harris Bank N.A., so there is a named sponsoring bank behind the registration rather than an unattributed 'banking partner'.
  • + Gateway and specialty underwriting sit in the same group: North also owns Humboldt Merchant Services, a high-risk merchant account provider operating since 1992, and the two brands have shared a president.
  • + The feature set is appropriate to the audience — recurring billing, multi-currency, authorisation optimisation, hosted checkout and a white-label reseller API, which is what card-not-present specialty merchants actually need.
  • + No public pattern of merchant complaints. We found no class actions, no FTC actions and no substantial complaint file — thin evidence, but in a category where bad actors leave loud traces, its absence is worth something.

Trade-offs

  • – Total pricing opacity. No rates, no gateway fee, no setup fee, no monthly fee, no contract length and no cancellation terms appear anywhere on the site.
  • – Third-party reviewers report a standard early termination fee of 50% of the remaining contract value — a formula that scales with time left rather than capping, and considerably harsher than a flat termination charge. Inovio does not publish the clause, so it cannot be checked.
  • – Inovio's own site claims 'Since 1992'. North launched Inovio in April 2016; 1992 is the founding year of the parent group, North American Bancard, and of its sister brand Humboldt Merchant Services. Presenting the group's history as the brand's own is misleading, however common the practice.
  • – No Better Business Bureau profile of its own, so there is no independent complaint record to weigh either way. Its parent North American Bancard holds a BBB A+ and has been accredited since May 2001, but with 25 complaints closed in the last three years, 18 of them in the last twelve months, and a customer-review average reported near 1.2 out of 5.
  • – Very little independent merchant feedback exists at all. For a gateway that has been trading for a decade, the near-silence makes reference checks the only real due diligence available.
  • – The corporate relationship is easy to miss. Inovio, Humboldt, EPX, Payanywhere, PayTrace, Signature Payments and others are all North brands, so quotes from several of them are not independent quotes.

Fees in detail

  • Online rate: Inovio publishes no processing rates, gateway fees, setup fees or monthly fees anywhere on its site. Pricing is quoted per merchant against
  • Contract: Not published. Given the reported termination formula scales with remaining term, the contract length is the number that determines your exit cost, and it is the first thing to establish in writing.
