Overview

$45

Best for: High-risk e-commerce merchants on WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Wix, Ecwid or Shopify who have been declined by their platform's built-in processor, and who value being able to see gateway costs before starting a sales conversation.

Strengths

  • + Gateway pricing is published in detail, which is close to unheard of in high risk: four card plans from $0 to $495 a month with per-transaction fees from $0.15 down to $0.08, four alternative-payment plans at $10 to $15, and the add-ons priced openly — 0.006 of volume for cart connection, $0.05 per transaction for fraud protection, $1.60 per eCheck authentication.
  • + Dispute tooling is priced per alert on the public page — $38 per Ethoca alert, $20 per Verifi alert, $17 per RDR — so a merchant with a chargeback problem can model the cost of fighting it rather than being quoted after the fact.
  • + It is an officially supported third-party gateway for WooCommerce and integrates with BigCommerce, Wix, Ecwid and Shopify — precisely the platforms whose native payment products decline the categories Bankful serves.
  • + The accepted-category list is broad and stated plainly: CBD, adult products, bail bonds, guns and firearms, nutraceuticals, tech support, dating and tobacco, alongside ordinary subscription, dropshipping, apparel, home goods, pet supplies and beauty merchants.
  • + Alternative rails are real products rather than talking points. eCheck, cryptocurrency acceptance with an optional fiat off-ramp, and LocalPay each have their own plan and their own published price — a meaningful backstop for merchants whose card acceptance is precarious.
  • + The Better Business Bureau rates Bankful A+ and it has been accredited since 29 September 2020. The one detailed 2025 complaint we found — an undisclosed $950 Visa registration fee — was acknowledged by the company as caused by outdated documentation and refunded in full on 16 October 2025, which is the right way to handle a billing error.

Trade-offs

  • – The published prices are gateway fees, not processing rates. Bankful states its card processing rates are set by industry risk and processing profile and live in the merchant agreement, so the percentage that will dominate your statement is exactly the number that is not on the pricing page.
  • – The Trustpilot record is bad: a 2.1 TrustScore across 11 reviews, 91% of them one star. The recurring allegations are monthly fees continuing after cancellation, unanswered emails, and merchants saying they were assured of high-risk approval and then declined or shut off shortly after setup. The sample is small, but the pattern is consistent and the same cancellation-billing complaint appears independently on the BBB file.
  • – Nothing about reserves is published — no percentage, no hold period, no release schedule — even though Bankful's own guidance says a reputable high-risk gateway should disclose exactly those. For a high-risk merchant, an undisclosed rolling reserve is a larger commercial risk than the gateway fee.
  • – The $0 Basic plan carries a $50 monthly minimum and the $25 Plus plan the same, so the entry price is effectively $50 a month until your per-transaction fees exceed it. That is fair, and it is also not what the headline says.
  • – Bankful and eMerchantBroker — already reviewed on this site — share a suite address at 2985 E Hillcrest Drive, Suite 209 in the Westlake Village and Thousand Oaks area, and Blair Thomas is credited as a co-founder of both. Neither company presents them as one group, and we found no formal statement of the relationship, but a merchant collecting comparison quotes should know the two are not arm's length.
  • – The founding date cannot be established. The BBB profile says the business started 29 April 2014, Crunchbase says 2016, a founder profile dates it to 2011, and Bankful's own site claims over 15 years of experience serving regulated industries. We have left the founding year off this listing rather than pick one.

Fees in detail

  • Online rate: Here is the distinction that matters most with Bankful, and it is easy to miss. What the pricing page publishes is the gateway cost — a mont
  • Disputes: Dispute tooling is priced per alert rather than per chargeback, and the numbers are published on the Premium plan: $38 per Ethoca alert, $20
  • Contract: Not published. Bankful posts plan pricing but no standard merchant agreement, so term length, auto-renewal and termination rights are invisible until you are in the process. Its billing explainer says all fees are disclosed during onboarding, documented in the merchant agreement and shown on merchant statements — which is a commitment to disclosure at signing rather than before it.

Standard published rate for a domestic online card payment. Confirm current pricing on Bankful's pricing page.
