Overview

BILL is the most complete bill-pay and invoicing platform available to a US small business, and its per-payment prices are fair. What it is not is cheap or simple: a three-person finance team on the Corporate plan pays $267 a month before a single payment moves, and the fee table runs to some thirty lines. Choose it when accounts-payable workflow, approvals, accountant integration and vendor-network reach matter more than the subscription; choose Melio or your bank's bill pay when they do not.

Best for: Businesses with enough supplier invoices to need approval workflows, two-way accounting sync and an audit trail — typically ten or more employees, or any company whose accountant already runs BILL — and firms that want AP, AR and corporate cards in one system.

Strengths

  • + Every fee is published on one page — subscription tiers, every disbursement method, exception fees and 1099 filing — and the per-payment prices are reasonable: 59¢ ACH, $1.99 mailed cheque, free virtual card and foreign-currency wires.
  • + The broadest feature set in the category: AP with approvals and procurement, AR with auto-charge, corporate cards with a credit line, 1099s, and two-way sync with every major SMB and mid-market accounting system.
  • + Scale that reduces friction — 9.2 million network members can be paid electronically without collecting their bank details, and 479,300 businesses used the platform as of June 2026.
  • + Licensed as a money transmitter in all 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands under NMLS ID 1007645, with regulated Canadian and UK entities, rather than operating under a partner bank's licence.
  • + A public company with audited accounts, $1.65 billion of fiscal 2026 revenue, no legal proceedings disclosed in its March 2026 10-Q and a BBB grade of A+.
  • + Instant and same-day options at published prices, and free card-based Spend & Expense for businesses that only want cards and expenses.

Trade-offs

  • – It is priced per user: a three-seat Corporate plan is $267 a month, and even Essentials is $588 a year per user, before any payment fee — Melio's entry plan is free and its paid tiers are flat.
  • – Card acceptance and Pay By Card at 2.9% are undifferentiated, and the fee table is long enough that the true cost of a payment depends on how you fund it, how the vendor receives it and how fast you want it.
  • – Support is the weak point: Trustpilot shows a 1.7 TrustScore over 1,659 reviews with BILL replying to only 13% of negative ones, and the BBB profile lists 188 complaints closed in three years, most about payments delayed or held.
  • – Money in transit sits with BILL. Recent complaints describe five-figure balances held for weeks after account closure and payments promised 'by end of day' that did not arrive; a licensed transmitter is entitled to hold funds under review, but the experience is opaque from the customer's side.
  • – The Trustpilot score is not a mean — 43% of reviews are five-star and 41% one-star — and the profile carries a 'no recent history of asking for reviews' note, so the 1.7 reflects the recent tail rather than the long-run base.
  • – Corporate uncertainty: buyout talks with Hellman & Friedman were reported in February 2026 after activist pressure from Starboard, Elliott and Barington; nothing had been agreed by the August 2026 results, but a change of ownership would be a change of priorities.
