Overview

ProMerchant offers the contract a small business should want — month to month, no exit fee, no setup fee, a free terminal — and a real willingness to place businesses that mainstream processors turn down. What it does not offer is a published price, a named processing partner or much evidence of scale: it is a company of roughly fifteen people that reportedly went quiet for a stretch of 2024 while a parent company was restructured, and whose glowing Trustpilot record is mostly several years old. The reported starting quote of interchange plus 0.50% and $0.15 is fair for a broker, and the absence of an early-termination fee means a mistake is cheap to undo. Treat it as a competent broker rather than a processor: ask which processor holds your account, get the rate and every monthly fee in writing, and keep the month-to-month promise in the contract you actually sign. That is a B-: good terms and honest positioning, held back by thin disclosure and a service record with a gap in it.

Best for: US small businesses that want month-to-month card processing with a free terminal and no cancellation fee; retail and restaurant owners who want to surcharge under a zero-cost programme; and businesses in verticals on its high-risk list — CBD, vape, supplements, firearms, credit repair, telemarketing, travel — that need someone to shop their file to specialist processors.

Strengths

  • + Month-to-month agreements with no early-termination fee, no setup fee and no application cost — the terms most small-business complaints about processors are really about.
  • + Free terminal placement with overnight shipping and no equipment leasing, which removes the most expensive trap in the traditional merchant-account sale.
  • + A published high-risk list covering dozens of verticals, access to multiple specialist processors, and a stated willingness to take start-ups with no processing history and owners with poor credit.
  • + Fast onboarding — many approvals within hours, others in a couple of days — and next-day funding for batches settled by 8:30pm Eastern.
  • + A choice of interchange-plus with a fixed, never-raised markup or a zero-cost surcharge plan for retail and restaurants, rather than one model forced on every merchant.
  • + A+ Better Business Bureau rating, accredited since November 2018, with only seven complaints closed in three years, and a 4.3 Trustpilot score from 258 reviews that ProMerchant answers.

Trade-offs

  • – No published rates or monthly fees anywhere on its site; the interchange + 0.50% + $0.15 starting point comes from third-party reviewers, not from ProMerchant.
  • – It does not name its sponsor bank or processing partners, so the merchant agreement, reserve policy and funding terms you actually get depend on whichever processor it places you with.
  • – A service gap in 2024: reviews from May to July that year describe main lines going to voicemail and reps not returning calls for weeks, which ProMerchant attributed to a restructuring at a parent company unrelated to payments before saying it was independent again.
  • – The positive review record is old — most Trustpilot reviews predate 2024, with only a couple in the last twelve months — so it says little about service today.
  • – A company of about fifteen people offers a personal account director, not a 24/7 support operation; if your director is unavailable, reviewers report it can be hard to reach anyone else.
